Chapter Fourteen

Mother Superior returned with a tray of food and a stack of clothes. When I told her we wanted to visit Rice University, she corrected me and said the school was called the Rice Institute. Then, when I told her we needed to borrow a car, she scoffed. Apparently, driving in the thirties was a luxury and only the rich owned cars. Since the church was definitely not rich, we’d have to ride bikes.

She left us with sandwiches and outfits pulled right out of the church donation box. Infiniti lifted a dingy white sailor-looking shirt with an oversized collar and ruffled blue trim. She held it by her fingertips. “No freaking way.”

As I filled Farrell in on who Huxley and Abigail were and how Trent's grandfather factored in, I sorted through the clothes—baggy blue jean overalls for the boys with white undershirts, and sailor style shirts and long white skirts for Infiniti and me. Definitely not something any of us would’ve selected. Worse? The clothes reeked as if they’d been left in a gym locker all year.

“People are going to think we’re hobos,” Infiniti declared, tossing the shirt back onto the bed.

“Maybe, but we need to blend in.” I smoothed out the crinkly shirts, hoping to erase some of the wrinkles. “Skinny jeans and tight shirts would be worse.”

Farrell’s gaze landed on Infiniti. “We can’t talk to anyone other than this Huxley person. Even then, we have to be careful with what we say. Understand?”

“Hey! Why are you looking at me?”

Trent had almost finished his sandwich. “You really have to ask, Infiniti?”

Infiniti placed her hand on her hip. “I watch sci-fi movies. I’ve seen Star Trek. I’m not an amateur, ya know. I know about the whole space-time-continuum thingy.”

The stale bread in my mouth clogged my throat. I forced it down with a swig of water and jumped to Infiniti’s defense. “We all have to be careful with what we say, not just Infiniti.”

Trent wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “You’re right.” He surveyed the clothes. “I guess we should get on with this and see this Huxley guy so we can get back home as soon as possible.”

After finishing our food, we took turns changing clothes. The result was something out of a bad Halloween party. We looked like orphans straight out of the movie Annie. And Infiniti looked like a little kid.

With a laugh, I poked her side. “Wanna be my little sis?”

She narrowed her eyes at me, Farrell, and Trent. “I really hate you tall people.”

Trent wrapped his arm around her neck, pulled her in, and rubbed the top of her head. “Ya do, huh?”

For a minute it was like we were just hanging out, with nothing to worry about, until Farrell reminded us otherwise. “We have business here. And as Dominique’s Walker, I will not hesitate to do whatever necessary to ensure her safety—including leaving the two of you behind should you hinder us.”

Trent released Infiniti and sauntered up to Farrell. He crossed his arms.
